About the event
Join us at the Hispanic-American Library for a special conversation with Dr. Charles R. Venator-Santiago as we commemorate the 156th anniversary of El Grito de Lares. This pivotal event in Puerto Rican history took place on September 23, 1868, when nationalist leaders in the town of Lares launched a rebellion against Spanish colonial rule in an effort to establish Puerto Rico as an independent republic. El Grito de Lares remains a powerful symbol of Puerto Rico’s enduring quest for self-determination and independence.
Dr. Charles R. Venator-Santiago, an Associate Professor in Political Science and El Instituto: Institute for Latina/o, Caribbean, and Latin American Studies at UConn Storrs, holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Massachusetts (2002). He was recently appointed to the National Scholarly Advising Committee of the National Museum of the American Latino and secured a $500,000 grant from the American Rescue Plan Act for the Puerto Rican Studies Initiative for Community Engagement and Public Policy (PRSI), which aims to document Puerto Ricans' contributions to Connecticut and support research-based public policy development.
This event is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Sign up here or contact Director Juan Falcon at jfalcon@hispanic-americanlibrary.org for more information.
